Nikola Tesla monument to be put up on Long Island

A monument to Serbian-American scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla will be put up on the 70th anniversary of his death in front of his Long Island laboratory.

Aleksandar Vlajković, deputy director of the Serbian government’s Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora, confirmed this.

The monument will most probably be revealed by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić, Vlajković said at Tuesday’s press conference at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) in Belgrade.

Vlajković, who is also the president of the organizational committee for building the Tesla monument, announced that Tesla’s laboratory in Shoreham in New York will be turned into the museum of Nikola Tesla in the U.S.

“We are certain that Tesla’s Wardenclyffe Tower, which was pulled down in 1917, will be erected next to the laboratory,” Vlajković said.

He said that the Tesla monument will be temporarily set up in Belgrade’s Knez Mihajlova Street, adding that the organizers of this initiative would like to see the replicas of the Tesla monument in Philadelphia, Belgrade, Chicago, etc. The exhibition devoted to Tesla’s work will be opened at the SANU Gallery on August 21.

The exhibition by Momcilo Mosa Todorovic, which will last for only seven days in Belgrade, will be staged in the building of Serbia’s Mission to the UN in New York next month when the Tesla monument will be unveiled.

The exhibition comprises 40 works of eminent Serbian painters inspired by Tesla’s character and work.

The sponsors and the organizers of the event are the Serbian president, the Serbian government’s Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, the SANU and the Art Gallery Radionica Duše.
